Way back, when the Internet first became attractive to advertisers, the advertising and marketing industries struggled to get to grips with it.

We all relied on the so-called techies to put the websites together. Sadly, this didn’t often lead to many sites grabbing the eye or imaginations of the visitors. Sales performance was pretty weak across the medium.

All but a handful of global marketers and tech wizards understood online buying behaviour, so when so-called search engine optimisation (SEO) arrived with a big fat promise to deliver guaranteed results, we all set about writing keyword-laden copy and conscientiously linking and blogging to entice all those eager Google ‘spiders’.

By now, online research and website analytics had been joined by (often) stunning graphics design, flash animation and video.

However, it was all pretty much a triumph of gismos over substance. Of course there were massive success stories of dot com this and dot com that. Below the hullabaloo we kept hearing that average businesses were not getting a decent return on investment.

It was clear that adding all the technical tools and features could help to attract interest but the resulting lack of solid relationships were all too often disappointing.

We knew that we had the potential to fill in the gap. Our marketing planning expertise when combined with digital and effective communication knowhow is what so many ad’ and digital agencies promise - but are rarely properly resourced to deliver.

They are usually staffed to provide communications with a smattering of real marketing knowhow. We know this first hand because most of us have held senior positions on the ‘client-side’.
